Ashley Madison and discretion. The two seem to be at odds with each other when you think about it.
In the last few years Ashley Madison has taken a much higher and public profile sacrificing discretion for numbers….dollars to be specific. While this no doubt brings in more men to the website, is it really advantageous to the subscribers? The ratios in terms of men to women are already hugely skewed with many more men than women, and the advertising is targeted at men, so is this really for the subscribers? I believe that it increases the “man pool” rather than the “dating pool”, making it almost impossible for men to succeed, meaning that after their initial payout, they won’t re-up, and Ashley Madison is hurting themselves, and those who use their website in the long run.
Ashley Madison has created quite a stir with their advertising, and has brought to the forefront “married dating”. I have experienced married dating first hand and have to say that I was chagrined to see them and hear them so publicly displaying something that I participated in, but that required such discretion. The last thing I wanted was for my spouse to know that such a thing existed! Until a few years ago, I didn’t, I stumbled across it strictly by accident, and quite frankly was shocked to think there was such a thing! But I was also intrigued…I had thought much about an affair, with my needs at home not being met, but had no idea of how to go about finding someone. When it crossed my path I found myself going back to it with much interest, and wondering if it worked. But for the first time in my life, I was also looking over my shoulder to see where my husband was…
I finally signed up on a website, filling out a profile that looked something like this; njk;ahfr8[b3 uq9rjefiAfnio[ea80ri3jI;JFKW;AKF for all the 200 hundred required characters, lol. I just wanted to look, right? My profile oddly enough was accepted and to illustrate how skewed the numbers are, I actually got email responses to my profile! I had stepped into the world of married dating; an underground where I felt safe and protected, where I could pick and choose how much of myself I wanted to reveal, and to whom I wanted to reveal it to.
I am grateful now that I am no longer immersed in this format for dating; with Ashley Madison’s rise in popularity, I have had to think about many of my friends that do this as well, and their safety and discretion. If a spouse were to suspect something, Ashley Madison would no doubt cross their minds…it’s a good starting place to look! It then begs the question of how many spouses will set up fake profiles to catch their mates, or even hire private investigators that may do the same. Overkill? Perhaps, but then again, maybe not, there’s a lot at stake here.
